<h2><span style="color: #000000;"><strong><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">◆ Photography Agreement</span></strong></span></h2>

Our staff, who are always out in the field, will accompany you to the Crested Kingfisher location we have carefully developed and nurtured over many years.

Once on location, we will share tips on shutter speed and other camera settings, as well as perch positions and flight routes, so you can approach your photography with confidence.

So as not to startle the bird, so it comes in close. And so that this photography environment remains sustainable, we take every possible measure to ensure everyone can photograph safely and comfortably.

◆ Crested Kingfisher Photography Season

● The Crested Kingfisher is a resident bird and can be photographed year-round in all four seasons.

The season begins with the bird against a snowy backdrop in January, and breeding behavior becomes visible from around March.
Around May 20th, wisteria blooms along the riverbank,
and in the second week of July, the white flowers of the dogwood tree begin to bloom.
The most exciting shooting period is from mid-July through late August! The juveniles repeatedly practice hunting, making diving shots much easier to capture.
From late October to mid-November, the bird can be photographed against beautiful autumn foliage.
Winter sessions offer the chance to photograph the Crested Kingfisher in snowy scenery, though conditions vary from year to year — please feel free to enquire.

◆ Shooting Hours

The best time to photograph the Crested Kingfisher is in the early morning, from before dawn until around 9:00 AM. Before the sky fully clears and before the heat sets in, the bird is at its most active — flying in frequently and hunting.

◆ Photography Method

Photography is conducted from within a hide (blind) in a seated position. A tripod is recommended for added convenience and stability.

◆ Shooting Distance

Shooting distance varies day by day, but the main perch is approximately 30 meters away. We capture a variety of scenes using this perch as our reference point.

◆ Recommended Equipment

We recommend a focal length of 400mm–800mm (full-frame equivalent). Any camera and tripod can be used for basic shots, but if you aim to capture flight and diving scenes, a capable camera body, lens, tripod, and ball head will be necessary.

◆ Difficulty Level

The Crested Kingfisher is particularly challenging to photograph due to its strong wariness and territorial instincts. At our location, we have spent years refining our approach to minimize disturbance. Please remain as quiet as possible once on site. The bird can recognize human faces — if spotted, it may not only flee but stay away for several days. Please do not peek out from the hide, and avoid shining lights or laser pointers toward the bird.

◆ Effect of Weather

Based on our experience, the Crested Kingfisher tends to be more active on overcast or rainy days than on clear sunny days — likely due to reduced raptor activity. The hide has a roof, but please bring rain gear for yourself and your equipment. If we determine that shooting conditions are not suitable, we will contact you in advance.
