So as not to startle the bird, so it comes in close.

And we don't want your experience here to end with simply taking a shot.

The Ruddy Kingfisher moves leisurely from branch to branch, searching for prey. It perches in many different spots, giving you the chance to thoughtfully compose your shots. Of course, there are also moments of hunting, bathing, hovering, and — depending on where it lands — stunning reflections on the water's surface. It is an ideal environment for creating truly artistic images.

Our staff, who conduct regular fieldwork and are always out in the field, will accompany and remain on-site to support you throughout.
Listen for the Ruddy Kingfisher's distinctive call — this bird is said to bring rain — then watch as it moves from branch to branch and hunts before your eyes.

If you're lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of nesting activity...

Sessions are available even in rainy weather, so please join us with confidence.
Please bring rain gear just in case.

◆ Photography Season

Season opens in early June.
Depending on nesting conditions, sessions run through approximately July 20th.

◆ Photography Method

Photography is conducted from within a hide (blind). Please prepare equipment suitable for waiting quietly.</sp

◆ How to Book

Please contact us with your preferred date via the calendar below or by email. We will confirm availability and get back to you promptly.
Sessions are kept small to prioritize photography quality. Bookings are accepted from 1 guest.

◆ Meeting Time & Location

As a guideline, we enter the field before dawn and wrap up around 10:00 AM when the Ruddy Kingfisher's activity slows down.
The default meeting point is the Ootake Camera shop. For guests arriving by public transportation only, pickup and drop-off is available if you are staying near Aizu-Wakamatsu Station or Kitakata Station.
Please note in the message field whether you will come to the shop or where you would like to be picked up.
Times may vary slightly depending on pickup arrangements.

◆ Photography Equipment

Please bring all your own equipment. Camera and lens rentals are not available. We appreciate your understanding.
A photography hide (blind) will be provided. Please bring a folding chair that suits your camera setup.
※ Due to popular demand, we now offer chair rentals. We have carefully selected chairs optimized for comfortable shooting inside the hide — please take advantage of this service.

◆ Other Gear

As we walk a short distance through the forest, please bring rain gear, mud-resistant footwear, and gloves.
Simple crampons are also recommended for added safety.

◆ For Beginners

The Ruddy Kingfisher is a highly alert bird. Please remain as quiet and still as possible at all times.
Especially when the bird is right in front of you, please refrain from talking inside the hide and avoid shaking or moving the tent.
Please move your lens slowly and steadily at all times.
If you use a white telephoto lens, please cover it with camouflage cloth or similar to minimize visibility.
Please also be careful not to poke your face out of the hide opening.

For Experienced Photographers

The Ruddy Kingfisher notices even small changes in its environment. Please use the hide provided by us rather than bringing your own, as unfamiliar equipment can alter the bird's behavior.
The bird may also flush if the lens is moved too quickly. Please keep all movements slow and deliberate.

◆ Shooting Location

The ground can be muddy, so please wear shoes that won't slip and that you don't mind getting dirty.

◆ Guide Fee

¥22,000 per person (tax included) · Maximum 5 guests per session

※ Refunds cannot be issued in the event that the target bird is not encountered.
We are working with nature, and we sincerely ask for your understanding.
Please note that we are unable to respond to enquiries asking only for the shooting location.

Hide Chair Rental

We now offer rentals of comfortable, fatigue-reducing folding chairs.
The hide has been adjusted to match these chairs, making for a very comfortable shooting position.
Please feel free to use this service.
Rental fee: ¥500

◆ Meeting Point

At the end of the booking process, there is a message field.
Please enter your preferred meeting point there.
If coming directly to the shop, please type "Shop visit."
※ Guests arriving by private car are kindly asked to come to the shop directly if possible.

◆ Photography Agreement

We always guide guests to the very best shooting location available on the day. These spots are irreplaceable and cherished by many guests.
To protect these locations, we issue a Photography Agreement. Please sign the agreement at check-in. A signature is accepted in place of a personal seal.
